HP Photosmart C7200 paper jam fix
I had paper feed issues to such an extent that I had to call HP. The resolution was to send me a new printer with a $50 discount ($149 total) to upgrade to a new printer. Given that I had to throw away the HP C7200. I decided to go further than the HP phone technician. In the end, I stumbled upon a discovery when disassembling the printer. My paper feeder was not engaging properly causing paper that looked like this:
Turns out this was caused by the cam mechanism at the bottom of the printer that was not allowing the paper holder to go into position completely. The cam mechanism is the black part shown in these two pictures:
Some how the cam was not reset. I helped it into place by hand. My printer works again. I expect this will happen again but I wont need another printer.

This is very close to being incredibly helpful. Can you explain what you mean by ‘helping it into place by hand’? Thanks.

The cam is the black piece shown in the correct position. I pushed it into position with my thumb. I did not have to push very hard. The springs are set to pull the cam into the proper place most of the time. So I was pretty soft in pushing.
When you pull the paper tray in and out the cam moves. The position shown is when the paper tray is all the way in.
I have not had a repeat instance. So I am not sure of the cause in the first place. The cam may not go into place if there is something keeping the paper tray from going in all the way. I think only a fraction of an inch out of place would cause the jamming.

Thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunately, it appears that the cam is in the proper position and it still jams after printing one or two lines. It’s so frustrating because, as the others have said, I’ve been very happy with this printer and its scanning ability. I guess that’s why HP makes them so cheap – to sell lots of ink and ‘incent’ buyers to purchase a new one every couple of years. On well, such is life …

Thanks! This was a lifesaver! After having to figure out an error code and finding out how to fix that, we were still left with this continuing paper jam problem. Couldn’t figure it out until we found your blog – fixed it right away! Our printer is running like a charm again!
Thanks!

HP is well known for manufacturing electronic gadgets which are reliable and cost effective product. In terms of customer satisfaction it is creating new mile stone. Your information is very useful for me.

Thanks for posting,

I dont have much to offer on this type of problem. If I was to guess the printer default settings on your computer have been set to high quality printing mode.
Good luck.

I have recently had an issue with the printer sold to me to replace the HP 7200. It looks like a broken gear inside the ink station. They wanted me to be yet another printer because of course the warranty is off. So I am going to shop for a more reliable printer… Likely from another company.

Thank you so much! It was exactly my problem. Had the printer sitting on a small towel and that must have finally inhibited the cam. Removed towel, reset cam, works fine now.

Morning – just found this thread and the comments suggest it’s very helpful to all other users – problem I have is that I can’t access the photo files showing the cam etc. i have a 404 (file not found) code. could you possibly email me the pictures so I can perform the re-set?
Many thanks

My 7280 started printing angled off to the left side. It seems to be chewing the upper right side edge of the paper and then a jam. Doing this with photo and bond paper.
The paper does not seem to have a stopping point now when I put it in the lower tray. It just seems to go way back in there, single sheets or a pile of paper, same deal.
Now, I have recycled the cam on the bottom and it did work and print straight. If this does it, hooorah!!
Thanks!

Thank you! I’ve been so frustrated trying to figure out why my paper kept jamming. Fixed the cam on the bottom and it’s printing perfectly again. Thanks for posting this & with the pictures too!
